I so agree with this. People always seem to want a quick fix and it never works. Especially with regards to animal control. Here we are, the most "enlightened" species on Earth (supposedly) basically taking over all natural habitat we can find and when we run out of space, we go find more. No wonder wild predators and other wildlife are getting into our communities. People need to take responsibility for their actions. As mentioned, where do you expect those poor animals to go? I have a family and I would love for my daughter to grow up in a world I'm proud of and unfortunately, I don't see that happening. I could go on, but it's her bedtime and I'm tired. At least I know she will be taught to respect nature and love all creatures.

PINCH, PRONGED, CHOKE OR SHOCK COLLARS
The Nova Scotia SPCA opposes the use of pinch, pronged or choking collars due to the physical damage that can occur to the trachea, oesophagus, vertebrae and brain of the dog, in addition to the psychological damage from pain and stress associated with such devices. The Nova Scotia SPCA is also opposed to shock collars used for training or containment, because they cause pain and generate a fear based response (verses positive-reinforcement based training). The Nova Scotia SPCA advocates for the use of humane alternatives such as simple flat buckle collars, properly fitted harnesses or pressure/control harnesses that do not encourage pulling (fitting flat to the body), limited slip collars (martingale slip and quick release) or head halters also referred to as halti head collars or gentle leaders (attaching under the chin and controlling the dogs nose to point down).

--

The SPCA website doesn't say a whole lot about shock collars, but they do say they're against the use of them and why. Not sure where the NSVA and Trainers Assoc. stands, but I'll try to find more this afternoon.

This is a multifaceted problem – but as you rightly point out it is our decisions to not aid in TNR and to eradicate wildlife habitat as well as introducing animals that were not indigenous to an area that can and will lead to problems.
Our governments – municipal, regional and federal are myopic and only look to a quick fix – kill kill kill … and when that doesn’t work they say let’s try that method again.
Very disheartening to see so many of the public being reactive instead of proactive and that means EDUCATION and that also means our politicians need to educate themselves too.

Mankind are the only ones that is harming nature. The clearcutting / building is taking the natural habitat away from the creatures of the forests. Where are they suppose to go? Oh right, mankind is the end all be all. If it incringes on what mankind perceives to be theirs, kill it. Great fix ( NOT).

Great read. Any money at all spent in a " pet store" ( not a pet supply store ) is putting money into the hands of BYB's and puppymills.

I am glad to see more and more people are seeing what is really happening out there. Hopefully more and more will become foster parents of cats and dogs. Like you said, unless you are part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

I just lost one of my foster dogs because of being from a puppymill / BYB. This dog came from parents that were so over bred and inbred, his brain couldn't handle it. He was such a gorgous boy and so loveable but the breeders of his parents couldn't care less about him or his parents. So sad because this boy was less then 3 years old. His brain was in so much pain and peril.

So please pay attention and seek a reputable breeder, shelters or rescue. Do not support in any way puppymills or backyard breeders. Do your homework on a breed(s) you like and trust the rescue / shelters/ reputable breeders to know if the dogs they have will fit into your lifestyle in order to have a happy family unit.

A acquaintance of mine has a website that is dedicated to educating the world about puppy mills. I saw your site and appreciate what you are doing. Too many individuals don't understand how very much animal cruelty is going on today. Thanks for assisting the cause.
