| Anyone with a pet at home can attest to the rewards
having a feline friend can bring, but there are many cats in the
city who live in less-traditional homes and provide great joy
to those they interact with everyday. There are “resident” cats all around the city – they are cats who have been adopted by a group of people other than a family. They live in libraries, veterinary clinics, retirement homes, special care homes, transition houses, and retail stores. As part of a month-long celebration of cats at the Fredericton Library during the month of May, the Fredericton SPCA is inviting submissions to celebrate those cats who have made a difference by becoming a “resident”. “We decided to honour the resident cat and the unique contribution they make in the lives of people after we decided to celebrate our own resident cat at the SPCA – Sassy,” explained Stephanie Walsh, FSPCA executive director. On April 20 the organization marked Sassy’s arrival at the SPCA – 15 years to the date. Sassy was adopted by the shelter staff and has been a resident of the shelter since 1993. “Our volunteer board of directors felt it was appropriate the SPCA acknowledge the contributions Sassy has made in her years at the shelter, so we decided to host a birthday party for her,” said Walsh. “When we started working with the library and other organizations to celebrate cats in May, we saw a perfect opportunity to extend that to include a special nod to all those resident cats who have contributed to so many lives.” Anyone or any organization who currently, or previously, has welcomed a resident cat into a unique environment is being asked to participate in this celebration. An exhibit of all the resident cats, past and present, from the Fredericton and surrounding areas will be on display at the Fredericton Library, beginning May 9. Submissions should be delivered to the Fredericton SPCA no later than Friday, May 2 at 4 p.m. Submissions for the resident cat exhibit should include: 1
high quality photograph (preferably 8x10 but not smaller that
5x7) and a short write-up that explains a bit about how the
can became a resident and the impact the cat has had on those
who spend time with them. |
